Quasimodo, Salvatore (1901–1968): Maskinskrivet, egenhändigt undertecknat brev, 1 s., daterat “Milano, 16 novembre 1959”.
 
Ställt till “Gentile signora Bolay” (Karl H. Bolay (1914-1993), inte alls någon ‘signora’, översättare av en volym Quasimodo till tyska, kom till Sverige från Tyskland 1957 och var bibliotekschef i Malung.

Trevligt brev från tiden för Quasimodos nobelpris vintern 1959. Quasimodo tackar för en inbjudan att komma till Malung i samband med hans Sverige- och Stockholmsbesök. Han lovar ingenting bestämt, skriver att han är osäker på vad han har för övriga åtaganden samt att även klimatet spelar in, kyla tycker han inte om.

Hålslaget, vikt två gånger.

Åtföljt av ett senare brev från Bolay (1961) till en oidentifierad mottagare, där Bolay skriver att han sedermera blivit ovän med Quasimodo över förhandlingen om en ny översättning.

An attractive letter very close in time to Quasimodo’s Nobel prize for Literature in the winter of 1959.

Addressed to “Gentile signora Bolay”, actually Karl H. Bolay (1914-1993), no signora at all. Bolay was the translator of a volume of Quasimodo into German (1950), moved to Sweden from Germany in 1957 to become library director at Malung.

Bolay had apparently hoped that Quasimodo would be able to visit Malung when he came to Sweden to receive his prize. Quasimodo replies that he can make no promises, he is uncertain as to what other “impegni” he might have in Sweden and is also worried about the cold nordic climate.

Accompanied by a later from Bolay to an unnamed recipient. Among other things he writes that he and Quasimodo had later fallen out over the negotiation of the terms of another translation.

Folded twice, witjh filing holes in the lefthand margin.
